Walk Back Home

Family Portrait Series: Ekene as Father, 2019, oil on birchwood, 15” diameter
In 2019, Ekene Emeka Maduka was one of twenty artists to receive the Dean Prize Award by Kasseem Dean (Swizz Beatz), an American record producer, rapper, songwriter and collector.
The award supported solo exhibitions of emerging artists selected globally. For Maduka’s show, Walk Back Home, The artist paid tribute to her home country, Nigeria, which is often the basis of her oeuvre. Part of the collection sees her personifying her father, mother, sisters, and alternates of herself.
In these works, endeavours are set in motion to construe the perceived, constructed images of those closest to us with fresh eyes that reveal bias only recognizable from a distance. The show was critically reviewed in Akimbo Journal by Artist, Writer, and Curator Luther Konadu.
